LIFE ON THE ROAD: The UAH softball team will continue Gulf South Conference action on the road this weekend, traveling back to Montgomery to take on conference newcomer Auburn Montgomery. The two teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up the series with a doubleheader that is to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Chargers enter the weekend at 9-4 (1-2 GSC).
Â
WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE: AUM is in its first year of transitioning to a full-time member of the Division II and the league, and as has been the case with other teams making similar moves in recent times, games against the Warhawks will count in the standings but AUM will not be eligible for postseason play.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: UAH dropped a pair of contests late on the conference season's first day, but the team bounced back last Sunday with a last-inning win of its own when the squad knocked off West Georgia 7-5.
Â
MALONE ON FIRE: Reagan Malone is off to an impressive start in her sophomore season, batting a team-best .538 thanks to 14 hits and 26 at-bats, and she has also driven in eight runs while scoring 12 times. Additionally, Malone has walked 10 times and been hit by a pitch once to feature an on-base percentage of .676 which ranks 12th in Division II.
Â
THE NEED FOR SPEED: The Chargers have already registered 30 stolen bases on the year while also collecting eight triples, ranking the team among the best in the nation in both. In steals per game, the Chargers are 15th in the nation, while the squad ranks 12th in Division II in triples per contest. UAH's total of eight triples in 13 games is just one shy of last year's total of nine.
Â
NOT AN EASY OUT: Through the first 13 games, the Chargers have struck out just 33 times on the year which is the second-lowest total in the GSC and is only six more than Montevallo's 27 which have come in four fewer games. Additionally,
Kiara Akles ranks as the fifth-toughest player to strikeout in the nation.
Â
ABOUT AUBURN MONTGOMERY: The Warhawks enter the three-game set at 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, and the team will be playing their first home games of the year this weekend. Among regulars, Hannah Dailey leads the team with a .474 average at the plate as she has nine hits and 10 runs, while Abby Krueger has driven in a team-high seven runs. In the circle, both Michaelyn Foster and Taylor Tiffany own identical 1-0 records and 1.17 ERAs.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers are 3-1 all-time against AUM with the last meetings coming a year ago when the two teams split a doubleheader at Charger Park. UAH won 5-1 in the first game before the Warhawks claimed the nightcap by a 4-2 score.
