No. 22 UAH Falls on the Road at Shorter in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROME, Ga. | The No. 22 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team dropped both games of a road doubleheader on Thursday, falling 6-5 and 2-1 to host Shorter. UAH is now 23-10 (13-8 Gulf South Conference), while Shorter moves to 15-16 (10-10 GSC).

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will return to action next weekend in Huntsville, welcoming West Alabama to Charger Park for a three-game set. The series starts with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Shorter 6, UAH 5
Game Changer
-Shorter scored four times in the bottom of the fifth and then held off a furious UAH comeback bid in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Inside the Box Score
-UAH outhit the Hawks by an 11-6 margin with Alaina Hampton going 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Chargers.
-Amber Hammonds also had a multi-hit game as she was 2-for-3 while also knocking in a pair of runs.
-Four of UAH's 11 hits were for extra bases with Hampton logging a home run and a double while Shannon Long and Hammonds also both added a double in the contest.
-The Chargers added four more stolen bases with Reagan Malone, Kiara Akles, Ashley Cornell, and Long each recording one.
-Kiara Akles took the loss in the circle for UAH, allowing just three hits in four innings while giving up five runs of which only two were earned, and Jada Hayes pitched the final two innings and surrendered just one unearned run.

Key Plays
-A scoreless tie was broken in the top of the third inning when Hampton hit a two-run homer to centerfield, and Hammonds added to the lead in the fourth when she singled in Cornell to make it 3-0.
-The Hawks – who did not have a baserunner until the fourth – scored twice in the home half to pull within one, but a Brooke Miller single pushed in another run in the fifth to give the guests a 4-2 lead.
-The hosts then scored four unearned tallies in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 6-4.
-UAH would threaten in the sixth, getting runners to second and third before being stranded there, and the team loaded the bases in the seventh with Hammonds being hit by a pitch to force in a run before the Hawks got a game-inning double play to end the contest.

Noteworthy
-The three-hit game is the first of the season for the freshman Hampton who records her seventh home run of the year, and she now owns 31 RBI for the season.
-The Chargers have now had at least four steals in 14 games on the year.

Shorter 2, UAH 1
Game Changer
-The Hawks made the most of their most significant threat, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth which would prove to be the difference despite a strong effort from Layton Murphy in the circle for UAH.

Inside the Box Score
-Murphy when the distance for UAH, scattering five hits in six innings of work while striking out six and walking just one.
-UAH outhit the Hawks by a 6-5 margin in the game, and five different players – Malone, Miller, Hammonds, Akles, and Cornell – accounted for the hits for the Chargers.
-Both Malone and Miller had a double, while Akles hit a solo home run to account for UAH's lone run.

Key Plays
-Akles broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when she hit a home run to center, and the score would remain 1-0 until the sixth.
-The first two batters for Shorter in the inning reached after being hit by a pitch and then scored on a two-run single with one out in the inning.
-UAH would get a runner on with two outs in the seventh inning, but an effort to get into scoring position was thwarted as Shorter threw out the would-be base stealer.

Noteworthy
-Akles has now hit nine home runs on the season and has totaled 35 RBI which ranks second in the GSC.
