No. 23 UAH Completes Series Sweep of Union with Two Wins Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. | The No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team pushed its winning streak to five games in a Saturday sweep of Union, winning 7-2 and 6-1 to take all three games of the road series. UAH improves to 31-12 (21-8 Gulf South Conference) with the pair of victories, while UU slips to 16-29 (7-22 GSC).
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will return to action on Wednesday when the team plays its final regular season non-conference games, welcoming Miles to Charger Park for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
 
UAH 7, Union 2
Game Changer
-After Union pulled ahead 2-1 in the third inning, the Chargers had back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Amber Hammonds and Alaina Hampton followed by a two-run homer from Taylor Wascavage that pushed the guests ahead for good.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers outhit Union 13-6 in the contest, and Wascavage led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 showing with the two RBI on the home run.
-Reagan Malone, Shelby Booker, and Jada Hayes all had a pair of hits, and six of UAH's hits were for extra bases as Malone joined Hammonds and Hampton with a double, while Brooke Miller and Hayes also homered.
-Both Wascavage and Hayes scored twice.
-The Chargers stole five bases with five different players logging a stolen base.
-Kiara Akles earned the win in the circle, striking out two in 4.1 innings of work, and Hayes picked up a second straight save, tossing a perfect 2.2 innings of relief.
 
Key Plays
-The game was scoreless until the third when Malone started the scoring for the Chargers by doubling in Wascavage who had led off the inning with a base hit and then moved to second on a sacrifice by Ashley Cornell, but the hosts would take the lead themselves in the third by scoring twice.
-The Chargers then sent nine batters to the plate in the big top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead, and the team tacked onto that advantage in the top of the fifth when Hayes led off with a solo shot to left.
-The scoring was completed when Miller led off the seventh with a homer to center to produce the 7-2 final.
 
Noteworthy
-The home run for Wascavage is her second of the season, and she now has 25 RBI on the year.
-Akles moves to 9-3 on the season in the circle, while Hayes now owns three saves.
 
UAH 6, Union 1
Game Changer
-In the nightcap, it was a five-run third inning that was punctuated by a three-run homer by Hammonds that proved to be the difference, pushing the Chargers from being down one to up four en route to the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Hits in the contest were even at 6-6, and Booker recorded a pair to lead the Chargers.
-UAH's other hits came from Malone, Hayes, Hammonds, and Akles.
-The Chargers also drew five walks including three from Wascavage.
-Hayes earned the win in the circle, tossing 2.1 innings of relief and allowing just two hits, and Layton Murphy pitched the other 4.2 innings, striking out two and scattering four hits.
 
Key Plays
-After Union struck first with a run in the bottom of the second, the Chargers would bat around in the top of the third, scoring on an error and an RBI by Hayes before Hammonds hit one out to center with Wascavage and Hayes both on to put the guests up 5-1.
-Another error provided UAH with its sixth run in the top of the fourth, and though UAH would threaten in the sixth when it loaded the bases, Hayes would strand them there to preserve the 6-1 score.
 
Noteworthy
-The win is the seventh of the season for Hayes in the circle.
-Hammonds has now hit seven home runs on the season, and she is one of five Chargers to have at least 30 RBI as she totals 34 now.
-The three walks by Wascavage match a single-game season high for UAH, joining her with Hayes and Malone who walked three times against Barry on Feb. 3 and Georgia Southwestern on Feb. 9, respectively.
