BACK HOME: The UAH softball team returns to Charger Park this weekend, welcoming West Alabama for a three-game set that starts with a single game at 2 p.m. on Saturday and concludes with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, and the team then travels to North Georgia for a 2 p.m. CDT doubleheader on Tuesday. UAH enters the stretch of games at 23-10 (13-8 Gulf South Conference).
Â
AROUND THE GSC: Behind first-place North Alabama (18-2) is quite the logjam in the conference standings as Valdosta State is in second at 15-6 with West Florida in third at 12-7, while both Montevallo and UAH sit tied for fourth at 13-8 in league play. In sixth is Mississippi College at 12-8, and Delta State is seventh at 12-9. Shorter rounds out the top eight in the league at 10-10.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: The Chargers will be looking to bounce back from a tough series at Shorter when the team dropped all three games on the road including the last two by one-run margins.
Â
BIG BATS: UAH continues to feature one of the most powerful lineups in the league, ranking second in the conference in home runs with 36, and the team's slugging percentage of .552 is also the second-best mark in the conference. That production has allowed the Chargers to score 260 runs on the year which is also the second-best amount in the GSC.
Â
KEEPING THEM IN THE YARD: Conversely, UAH's pitching staff has limited the opposition's ability to hit homers on the year, allowing just 11 home runs in 33 games which is the second-fewest given up in the conference.
Â
DRIVING THEM IN: UAH's impressive RBI total of 239 is spread out quite evenly among its roster with nine players having at least 20 RBI on the season.
Kiara Akles leads the team with 35, while fellow freshman
Alaina Hampton is in second with 31.
Â
ABOUT WEST ALABAMA: The Tigers visit Huntsville at 16-22 overall, 8-13 in conference play, and with an 8-5 mark in road games. Nicole Buccieri bats a team-best .378 while driving in a team-high 20 runs, and Carleigh Mills owns a 3.59 ERA with a 5-1 record and 40 strikeouts to lead the team in the circle.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers are 69-9 all-time against West Alabama, and UAH swept the season series from the Tigers last year by winning all three games in Livingston.
Â
ABOUT NORTH GEORGIA: North Georgia is the No. 2 team in the country and has doubleheaders this weekend against Flagler and Young Harris, going into those games at 42-1 overall. Seven different regulars bat over .300 for the Nighthawks including Shelby Hammontree who is hitting .382 with nine homers and 40 RBI. The team features a staff ERA of 0.95, and Kylee Smith is 22-0 in the circle with 204 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: UAH holds a 14-9 edge against North Georgia, and the two teams last met a year ago on the season's first day when the Chargers run-ruled the Nighthawks 8-0 in six innings. The two programs have not met in Dahlonega since the 2014 season which saw the two teams split a doubleheader.
