Chargers Earn First Win at Delta State Since 2013 with 70-58 Victory

CLEVELAND, Miss. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team picked up a big road win over the league's top team on Thursday night, winning 70-58 over Delta State. the Chargers improve to 13-5 (6-4 Gulf South Conference), while the Statesmen fall to 12-6 (8-3 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-After the hosts narrowed the gap to just seven at 58-51 with 5:38 left in the game, the Chargers went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to go back up by 14, and the visitors remained ahead by double figures the rest of the way in sealing the victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers were paced on the night by JJ Kaplan who logged a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds on the strength of nine made shots, and the redshirt sophomore added two steals, an assist, and a block.
-Seth Swalve went 6-for-7 from the floor including a 3-for-3 showing from downtown to score 17 to go along with three assists, a team-best mark that was matched by Dalton Barkley.
-Sam Orf rounded out UAH's double-figure scorers as he scored 10 points – all key makes in the second half – to go along with four boards and two assists.
-For the game, the Chargers shot 50.0 percent and knocked down nine 3-pointers while using a strong defensive effort to hold DSU to a 38.6 percent shooting mark.
-The Chargers outrebounded the Statesmen by a 39-27 mark.
 
Inside the Flow
-The Chargers led wire-to-wire, pushing their advantage into double figures for the first time after a Malik Cook-Stroupe triple made it 17-6 at the 12:24 mark of the opening half.
-UAH pushed the advantage out to as many as 15 late in the half, and the guests carried a 32-19 lead into the break at the half after neither team was able to score for the final three minutes of the period.
-Out of the break, the Chargers would gain their largest lead of the night at 46-28 with 14:54 left in the contest, but Delta State went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to pull within seven at 50-43 with 10:40 remaining.
-UAH would not let the Statesmen pull any closer than that, using the late spurt to put the contest away with a Tanner Finley 3-pointer at the 1:29 mark serving as the game's final dagger.
 
Noteworthy
-The win is UAH's first at Delta State since a 73-71 victory on Feb. 16, 2013.
-Kaplan's 23 points are a career-high for the Huntsville native, and the double-double is his fourth of the season.
-Swalve's 17 points is his best scoring performance since totaling 22 against Clark Atlanta on Nov. 20.
-UAH's rebounding margin of 12 is the best against Delta State by an opponent this season.

-The Chargers return to action on Saturday at Mississippi College. Tip-off in Clinton is scheduled for 4 p.m.
