No. 6 UAH Takes First Setback in Road Loss at Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga. | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team picked up its first loss of the 2019-20 season on Sunday, falling 84-62 to host Valdosta State. The Chargers slip to 8-1 (2-1 Gulf South Conference), while VSU improves to 7-2 (2-1 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-After the Chargers had narrowed their deficit to just four at 48-44 at the 15:28 mark of the second half, Valdosta State went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to push its advantage back into double figures where it would remain for the rest of the contest.
 
Inside the Box Score
-JJ Kaplan paced UAH by nearly logging a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.
-Seth Swalve joined him in double figures with 13 points.
-The Blazers were led by Clay Guillozet who scored 25 and collected eight rebounds.
-For the contest, VSU outshot the Chargers by a 53.4 percent to 39.7 percent clip.
-The Blazers won the battle on the glass by a 39-27 margin.
-VSU established a wide 50-30 advantage in points in the paint.

-The Chargers led at the game's first media timeout, building a 10-9 lead at the 16:21 mark of the opening half, but seven straight points for VSU pushed the hosts in front 16-10 at the 12:52 mark.
-The lead for the hosts grew to as many as 14 in the period, but UAH would narrow the gap to seven before going into the half trailing 42-32.
-UAH started off the second half strong, outscoring VSU by a 12-6 margin to cut the deficit to 48-44 with 15:28 remaining in the game, but the Blazers then took control of the contest the rest of the way to earn the victory.
 
Noteworthy
-Valdosta State was receiving votes in the latest NABC Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.
-This is UAH's first setback in its last 14 regular season games.
-Kaplan has now scored in double figures in eight of the team's nine games.
 
Next Time Out
-The Chargers will aim to bounce back on Tuesday in the Sunshine State as the team travels to West Florida. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
