UAH Rolls Past Christian Brothers to Lock Up Super Tuesday Home Game

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team continued its hot ways on Saturday, wrapping up the regular season home slate with an emphatic 83-56 victory over visiting Christian Brothers. The Chargers improve to 21-6 (14-5 Gulf South Conference), while the Buccaneers fall to 18-9 (13-6 GSC).
 
The victory assures UAH of a home game in the opening round of the upcoming GSC Men's Basketball Championships, and that contest is set for Tuesday, March 5, at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
 
Turning Point
-After Christian Brothers pulled to within one with 15:28 remaining, the Chargers ripped off a terrific 23-0 run over the next seven and a half minutes to blow the contest wide open, taking a 71-47 lead at the 8:09 mark.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Seth Swalve turned in a terrific performance to lead the Chargers, going 9-for-14 including 5-for-7 from long-range to score a game-high 26 points, and the redshirt sophomore also added five rebounds.
-Joining him in double figures were Sam Orf who was 7-for-11 on his way to scoring 17 and Malik Cook-Stroupe who came off the bench to have a 4-for-5 shooting mark to score 10.
-JJ Kaplan led the Chargers in rebounds with six and assists with eight to go along with his eight points.
-The Chargers shot 68.0 percent in the second half on their way to finishing the game connecting on 58.5 percent of its attempts including a 15-for-26 showing from 3-point land, and UAH's defensive effort held CBU to a 24.1 percent mark in the second half for an overall shooting percentage of 37.5 percent.
-UAH outrebounded the Bucs by a 31-27 margin.
 
Inside the Flow
-The lead exchanged hands four times and there were four ties in the game's first five minutes, and the first significant lead of the game belonged to Christian Brothers who surged ahead by a 26-18 score at the 9:41 mark of the opening half.
-A quick spurt from the Chargers pulled the hosts back within one at 26-25 with 7:34 remaining, and the team would tie the contest twice more in the half's final minutes before a Max Shulman 3-pointer at the buzzer put UAH back in front again at 38-37.
-The Chargers scored the first four points of the second period to take a five-point lead, but CBU pulled back within one at 48-47 with 15:28 remaining.
-The big 23-0 run was spurred on by four consecutive 3-pointers from the Chargers, and UAH allowed the guests to score just nine points in the final 15:28.
 
Noteworthy
-This will mark UAH's fourth home game in the GSC tournament in the five seasons that the league has gone to campus sites for the opening round, and the Chargers are 3-0 in those previous three contests.
-The 26 points for Swalve mark a season-high for the Cullman, Alabama, native, and the five made 3-pointers represent his second-best showing of the year.
-Orf has scored more than 15 points in seven straight games, and he is now scoring a team-best 14.6 points per game.
-The eight assists for Kaplan mark a career-best for the redshirt sophomore.
-The 57.7 percent shooting mark from 3-point land for the Chargers is the best of the season.
-UAH honored its two seniors, Tanner Finley and Elijah Garrison, prior to the contest.
 
Next Time Out
-UAH will close the regular season on the road on Thursday at West Georgia, and that contest is slated for a 6:30 p.m. CT start.
