UAH Clinches Berth in GSC Tournament with Win Over CBU Saturday

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team clinched a berth in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championships with an 83-72 victory over Christian Brothers on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH rises to 13-12 (11-8 GSC), while CBU dips to 10-14 (7-12 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-The Chargers turned in a dominant first quarter against the Buccaneers with a 26-11 lead after the first quarter, and UAH would not relinquish its lead for the rest of the contest for the 83-72 win.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Aryn Sanders paced the Chargers offense in the victory with a team-high 21 points to go along with a team-best seven assists.
-Sanders additionally posted a team-best two steals and was tied for first on the roster with six rebounds, while shooting 7-of-16 and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
-Baylee Johnson finished second to Sanders with 17 points in addition to chipping in four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
-Morgan Tipton also scored in double-figures with 10 points, as she also posted five rebounds and a team-high three blocks.
-Katie Speegle tied for the roster lead in rebounds with six in 13 minutes of work while also scoring eight points with a 4-for-5 mark from the field.
-UAH dominated the boards as the squad outrebounded CBU 43-30 in the contest.
- The Chargers shot 50.0 percent from the field in the game, while holding the Bucs to 43.1 field goal percentage.
 
Inside the Flow
-UAH's offense was lights out from beyond the arc going 6-for-9 on three-pointers in the opening period to guide the squad to an early 26-11 lead.
-After the Chargers opened the second on an 11-8 run in the first five minutes, the Buccaneers came alive with a 14-7 run to close out the half to cut the hosts lead to 44-33 at the half.
-Christian Brothers gained four points on the Chargers in the third quarter on a 24-20 advantage, before UAH closed out the contest by outscoring CBU 19-15 in the fourth quarter for the 83-72 victory.
 
Noteworthy
-Sanders has scored 20 or more points eight times in her junior season.
-UAH has topped 40 rebounds in a game four times in the 2018-19 GSC slate.
-This is UAH's first GSC tournament berth since the 2015-16 season.
-UAH honored its four seniors -- Johnson, Tipton, Allie Bolton, and Heidi Miller -- following the game.
