Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Ground Falcons in Saturday Road Win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team overcame a sluggish start, using a second-half push to knock off Montevallo 61-51 on the road on Saturday. The Chargers improve to 17-6 (10-5 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while UM falls to 9-16 (5-10 GSC).

Turning Point
-UAH got hot at exactly the right time, outscoring Montevallo 30-12 during a 13-minute stretch in the second half to turn a 13-point deficit into a lead that the Chargers would hold onto the rest of the way in earning the victory.

Inside the Box Score
-JJ Kaplan led the Chargers on the day, going 6-for-9 from the floor and 8-for-9 at the charity stripe on his way to scoring 21, and the redshirt sophomore nearly logged a double-double as he grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while also adding two steals, an assist, and a block.
-Joining him in double figures was Sam Orf who hit a trio of triples to score 17 while also collecting four boards.
-After shooting just 26.1 percent in the first 20 minutes, UAH connected on 12 of its 20 attempts in the second half to finish the game shooting 41.9 percent, while the Falcons shot just 35.1 percent on the evening.
-Montevallo won the rebounding battle 40-27 and established a 12-0 advantage in second-chance points.
-UAH forced the Falcons to commit 13 turnovers and enjoyed a key 19-8 difference in points off giveaways.

Inside the Flow
-The Falcons scored the first nine points, holding UAH scoreless for over five minutes to start the game, and Montevallo led by as many as 11 in the opening period before the Chargers were able to narrow the gap to three at 25-22 at the half.
-Montevallo then scored 10 straight to open the second half, going up 35-22 by the 17:16 mark, but Kaplan stopped the bleeding with a trey and a layup to pull UAH back within eight with 15:17 left.
-An Orf 3-pointer just prior to the midway point of the period made it a 3-point game at 39-36 before a Max Shulman triple pulled UAH into a tie for the first time at 45-45 with 6:29 remaining in the game, and after the Falcons responded with a bucket to go back up by a pair, an old-fashioned 3-point play by Kaplan put the Chargers ahead for the first time at 48-47 at 5:42.
-From that point on, UAH outscored Montevallo 13-4 to surge in front and wrap up the 61-51 victory.

Noteworthy
-Kaplan now has nine rebounds in three straight games and has totaled 56 over his past six outings, and he ranks fourth in the GSC with 7.7 rebounds per contest.
-This is the fourth time this season that Kaplan has scored at least 20 points.
-Orf has at least three 3-pointers in nine games on the year.
-The six made 3-pointers are UAH's fewest in a win since the Chargers made five in a win over Saint Leo on Nov. 12, 2016.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will return home on Thursday to welcome Lee. Tip-off at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
