Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 16 UAH Defeats Delta State on the Road on Thursday

CLEVELAND, Miss. | The No. 16 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team won a thriller at Delta State on Thursday night, winning 66-64 to pick up a road conference win. The Chargers improve to 17-3 (9-3 Gulf South Conference), while DSU falls to 7-13 (3-9 GSC).

Turning Point
-UAH held Delta State without a field goal for the last 5:14 of the contest, and after a missed free throw that could have put the hosts up by one, Seth Swalve's bucket with just under a minute to go proved to be the difference maker, putting the Chargers up by the eventual 66-64 final score.

Inside the Box Score
-JJ Kaplan led the Chargers in scoring, pouring in 16 and just narrowly missing out on a double-double as he also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds to go along with a pair of assists.
-Joining him in double figures was Max Shulman who knocked down three shots from long-range on his way to scoring 15, while Swalve went 5-for-7 from the floor and added 12 points.
-Sam Orf paced the Chargers with four assists.
-For the game, UAH outshot the hosts by a 47.2 to 45.5 percent clip.
-After Delta State went 10-for-23 from 3-point land in the opening 20 minutes, the Chargers permitted the hosts to make just one of their 11 attempts in the second half.
-The hosts won the battle on the glass, grabbing 36 rebounds to UAH's 30.
-The Chargers turned it over just eight times and enjoyed a 14-5 edge in points off turnovers, and UAH also held a wide 30-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Inside the Flow
-The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team getting ahead by more than five points, and it featured 10 lead changes.
-With DSU up by five after making its 10th 3-pointer of the half, Kaplan would get a couple layups to fall in the closing minutes of the period to make it a 36-35 Delta State lead going into the halftime break.
-The second half was more of the same with the lead growing no larger than four for either side with the lead exchanging hands five times while being tied on six occasions.
-The Statesmen were up by three at 63-60 with 5:14 left, but a Kerney Lane free throw and a layup on a later possession tied the game, allowing Kaplan to give the Chargers a 64-63 lead with 1:36 left with a free throw of his own.
-Delta's last point of the game – and its only point in the final 5:14 – tied the game, but Swalve's bucket pushed UAH ahead, and the Chargers would force a turnover and two missed shots in the final minute to earn the victory.

Noteworthy
-After losing five straight in Cleveland, the Chargers have now won in back-to-back trips to the Magnolia State.
-This is Kaplan's 14th game in double figures.
-Swalve has scored at least nine in five straight, shooting 58.3 percent during that span.
-UAH is 4-0 this season when committing fewer than 10 turnovers.

Next Time Out
-UAH will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Mississippi College to wrap up the road trip. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
