HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team swept the West Division weekly awards from the Gulf South Conference, with
Alexis Woods earning Player of the Week honors while Oliva Smith was named the Freshman of the Week.
Â
This marks the first time that UAH has swept the weekly awards since the Freshman of the Week was instituted for the 2014-15 season, and it is UAH's first Player of the Week honor since Dina Saunders won it on Jan. 19, 2016.
Â
Woods is having a phenomenal start to her junior season, and that strong beginning continued this weekend when she averaged 25.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in UAH's home split with Union. On Saturday, the Athens, Alabama, native scored 32 points which is the best single-game performance in the league this season and the most by a Charger since the aforementioned Saunders did it en route to capturing the award in 2016. She recorded a double-double in both contests, grabbing 13 rebounds both on Friday and Saturday while also scoring 18 in the first game of the set.
Â
Woods is currently tied for second in the league in scoring with 20.3 points per game and is alone in second with 11.8 rebounds per contest.
Â
Smith was especially strong in the Saturday contest for the Chargers as she had the best game of her young career, shooting 4-for-8 from the floor while scoring nine points. The Atlanta native also picked up four steals and a rebound in the game.
Â
Woods, Smith, and their teammates will be off for the holidays, returning to action on Jan. 8 when the team travels to Memphis, Tennessee, to face Christian Brothers.
