HUNTSVILLE |
Max Shulman made a pair of free throws with nine seconds left,
Seth Swalve became the newest member of the 1,000-point club, and the No. 20 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team survived a late push from visiting Mississippi College in a 73-72 win at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday evening. The Chargers improve to 3-1 (3-0 Gulf South Conference), while MC starts its season at 0-1 (0-1 GSC).
Â
Turning Point
-Fouled after grabbing a defensive rebound, Shulman was as cool as you like at the other end, knocking down both free throws with 9.9 seconds remaining to win the game for the Chargers.
Â
Inside the Box Score
-Shulman led the Chargers with another double-double as he scored 21 on the strength of a 7-for-14 shooting performance including four 3-pointers while also adding 12 rebounds, and for good measure the redshirt junior had two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
-En route to reaching his personal milestone, Swalve was 7-for-13 from the floor and scored 17 to go along with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
-
Sam Orf rounded out UAH's double-figure scorers as he scored 15 while also having three boards, three steals, and an assist.
-For the game, the Choctaws outshot the hosts by a 44.1 percent to 39.7 percent clip, while it was UAH who won the rebounding battle by a 40-39 margin.
-UAH held a 22-19 advantage in points off turnovers after forcing MC into 19 giveaways.
Â
Inside the Flow
-MC enjoyed the early lead, going up 7-2 at the 17:47 mark of the opening half, but three minutes a four-point play from Shulman put the Chargers ahead 12-11 with 14:39 on the clock.
-After the guests went back ahead by one, the Chargers would have their best stretch of the game, outscoring the Choctaws 27-9 to take a 39-22 lead with 4:07 left until the half.
-Mississippi College would pull the game within single-digits at 44-35 at the half, and though the visitors closed the gap down to just five early on in the second period, an Orf triple at the 12:16 pushed UAH's advantage back out to 10 at 55-45.
-UAH held that same 10-point cushion with 7:35 left in the game, but a 13-2 run for the Choctaws sent MC ahead at 66-65 with only 2:47 remaining in the contest.
-With just 80 seconds to go and the Choctaws ahead by three, a Swalve bucket cut the gap to just one before the key defensive rebound and subsequent free throws from Shulman gave UAH the victory.
Â
Noteworthy
-Swalve becomes the 27th player in UAH history to reach the 1,000-point threshold and the first since
Justin Ward in 2018.Â
