HUNTSVILLE | Thanksgiving might be on Thursday, but
Luke Burnett clearly wanted to feast a night early as the redshirt freshman knocked down 10 3-pointers and led The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team to a 103-75 victory over visiting crosstown foe Oakwood on Wednesday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers move to 6-2 with their sixth straight victory, while OU falls to 0-5.
Â
Burnett was especially impressive in the first half, finishing one off the school record for points in a half with 29 (the record is 30 set by Thomas Jones on both Feb. 10, 1989, and Dec. 14, 1989) as he went 10-for-13 overall in the period including a 9-for-11 showing from beyond the arc.Â
Â
It is believed that the nine made 3-pointers is a program record for made triples in a half.
Â
The Knoxville, Tennessee, native would finish the contest with 34 points after going 12-for-19 and making the 10 treys, and that number of successful shots from downtown are the most by a Charger since at least the 2002-03 season (the record is 12 set by Jones in that Dec. 14, 1989, game against Cumberland), and it ties Burnett for eighth all-time in Gulf South Conference history for single-game 3-pointers made.
Â
Burnett entered the night as the nation's leader in total 3-pointers made on the season.
Â
Chaney Johnson also had a big night for the Chargers, shooting at an 8-for-13 clip on his way to scoring 20 and extend his double-figure scoring streak to start the season to eight, and for good measure he also grabbed seven rebounds.
Â
Rounding out UAH's trio that scored in double figures was
CJ Williamson who poured in 14 while leading the Chargers with six assists and three steals.
Â
Daniel Saylor paced the Chargers on the glass, collecting 12 of the team's 50 boards as UAH outrebounded Oakwood by 22.
Â
For the second time in three games, the Chargers never trailed as the home team jumped out to a quick 10-2 advantage just over two minutes into the game on their way to building up a 61-35 advantage at the half, and the lead would grow to as many as 33 and never dip below 20 in the second half as the team secured the 103-75 victory.
Â
UAH finished the contest shooting 50.7 percent overall and was 16-for-31 from long-range, while the Ambassadors shot 41.5 percent on the night.
Â
Edmen Stewart paced the visitors with 28 points.
Â
The Chargers will now be off until Monday when the team wraps up non-conference play with a visit from Milligan. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
