HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team was tripped up by West Georgia at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall 70-44 on Monday night to start a week where they will see action three times. The Chargers fall to 1-7 while UWG improves to 3-4.
Jesse Jennings has been a spark for Chargers as of late with her high-energy, gritty game and showed much of the same tonight scoring a team-high 14 points going 5-for-9 from the field, and she also picked up five steals and six rebounds. Sloan Mann was alongside Jennings to lead UAH in rebounds with six of her own and also sank a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to have her on her way to eight points. Seven different UAH players were on the scoresheet tonight.
The Chargers would score the game's first five points and a 7-2 run over the quarter's final six minutes put UAH up at the end of the first quarter 12-7. West Georgia would tie the game in the second at 19 points apiece and eventually would go on a run of their own to claim a 30-21 advantage at the halftime break.
UWG would hold on to a 27 point lead at the close of the third frame with the score reading 51-24 and although the Chargers pushed back some in the final stanza with some field goals of their own, the Wolves would go on to claim the victory in Huntsville 70-44.
For the game, UAH hit 30.8 percent of its attempts from the floor while West Georgia turned in a 44.4 percent shooting performance. The rebounding margin would favor the Wolves who picked up 47 boards opposed to the Chargers 30. Both teams took eight shots from the free-throw line with the Chargers connecting on 62.5 percent of those attempts and UWG on 50.0 percent.
Ranajah Verdell recorded 13 points for the Wolves while Tahya Campbell was also in double figures with 11. Jaylin Austin paced UWG on the glass with 8 rebounds for the night.
UAH will look to pick up a victory when they travel to Troy, Ala. on Wednesday night for an exhibition matchup with division one opponent Troy University before getting back to conference play when they take on Lee in Cleveland, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon.
Tip-off at Troy is set for 6:00 p.m.
