UAH Spars With West Florida in End to End Contest at Spragins Hall

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team battled in an end-to-end conference contest against West Florida at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall 64-60 on Sunday afternoon to start the 2022 calendar year. The Chargers fall to 1-10 while UWF improves to 11-2.

Alexis Woods was the Chargers leader in both points and rebounds on the afternoon scoring 14 while picking up 10 rebounds to record a double double. Eight different players for UAH were on the scoresheet tonight including Selena Pruitt who put up nine points, while Sloan Mann and Alaina Taylor both recorded eight.

After seeing the game's first eight points scored by the Argonauts, the Chargers would construct a 9-1 run to level the game at nine points apiece at the 2:47 mark of the opening quarter. An Alaina Taylor triple in the closing moments of the frame followed by a buzzer beater field goal from UWF created a 14-14 tie at the first intermission. A strong second quarter showing by UAH where they held West Florida to an 18.2 percent shooting performance from beyond the arc would put the Chargers in the lead 33-27 at the halftime break.

The Chargers would be up by as many as 11 in the third quarter but the visitors would not go away and were able to put together a few offensive runs to cause the lead to change hands with West Florida leading 48-44 at the close of the third. The temperature would be turned up in the fourth quarter as UAH put together a strong push to level the contest on a Pruitt three-pointer that got everyone on their feet and tied the game at 60-60 with 1:07 left to play. However, a UWF layup at the 0:38 mark and two free-throws in the last second gave West Florida the 64-60 victory.

Charlotte Elmore and Zoe Piller were the leaders for the Argos, each posting 15 points in the contest and Piller paced UWF on the glass picking up eight rebounds on the afternoon.

UAH will now turn its attention to the next two road games, taking on in-state rival Montevallo for a Thursday night contest before making a trip to the Peach State to take on Shorter on Saturday afternoon.

Tip-off in Montevallo, Alabama is slated for 5:30 p.m.
