Chargers Pick Up Another Road Victory Defeating Shorter on Saturday Afternoon

ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team picked up their second conference victory in three days, winning a 76-73 decision over Shorter on Saturday afternoon. UAH improves to 3-10 (2-6 Gulf South Conference), while the Hawks slip to 2-8 (0-7 GSC).

The Chargers had eleven different scorers in the contest including a trio that posted double digits which was led by Holly Harris who scored 17 to go along with five rebounds.

Jesse Jennings was 5-for-6 from the floor including five free throws to score 15, while Alexis Woods was the third Charger in double figures with 13 points and also led all players on the glass with 18 rebounds on her way to a double-double.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that featured seven lead changes and five ties, and though the Hawks would take their largest lead of the half by seven at 27-20, UAH would take the lead back two minutes later as Sloan Mann drove the lane and completed a three point play. The Hawks would put together a 5-2 run over the closing 2:35 of the half to carry a 34-32 advantage into the break.

A 7-0 run for Shorter to start the half put UAH behind by nine, but a 17-8 run over the back half of the third quarter by the visitors would see the game tied at 54-54 going into the final frame. Opening the last period of play with a couple of field goals, the Chargers would hold the lead the rest of the way before securing the 76-73 final.

For the game, UAH shot 44.4 percent and was 25-32 from the charity stripe, while the Hawks connected on 46.9 percent of their attempts but only went 4-10 from the free-throw line.

UAH won the rebounding battle by a 37-31 margin and constructed a 16-12 difference in second-chance points. Another key difference in the contest was the 27-6 difference in points from the bench that was tilted in favor of the Chargers.

The Chargers will be back in action on Thursday when they open a two-game home stand against two more GSC opponents with Christian Brothers coming to town and then a visit from Union on Saturday to follow.

Tip-off for Thursday is slated for 5:30 p.m. CT at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
