LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team dropped a Wednesday evening road game at West Alabama, falling to the Tigers 56-48. The Chargers drop to 5-16 (4-12 Gulf South Conference) while UWA improves to 15-8 (9-6 GSC).
Alexis Woods put up a season-high 24 points in the contest after going 11-for-14 from the field and she was also the Chargers leading rebounder on the night picking up nine boards. This season, Woods is averaging 12.1 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per outing which are both tops for the Blue & White.
Seven other Chargers recorded points in the game with
Miajah Bullock,
Selena Pruitt, and
Adrian Grant each scoring five.
Alaina Taylor had a trio of steals on the evening, the most by any player on either side.
A Bullock layup in the paint had UAH holding a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter, and although the Tigers would take the upper hand at 11-9, the Chargers quickly reclaimed the advantage to be in front by four at the end of the initial stanza. Woods would go 7-for-8 from the field throughout the first half, and even though the lead would change hands twice in the second frame, UAH would go into the halftime break on top 27-23.
A tight affair, no team would lead by more than four throughout the third quarter and West Alabama would take a one-point advantage into the final intermission, leading 39-38. Despite the Chargers taking the lead back after a pair of buckets from Woods to open the final frame, a 9-0 run helped UWA take the lead at 43-42 just after the halfway point of the fourth. This would prove to be the turning point in the game as the Tigers would not surrender the lead again on their way to securing the 56-48 victory.
For the contest, UAH hit 35.8 percent of its attempts from the floor while West Alabama turned in a 40.0 percent shooting performance. The Tigers would narrowly win the rebounding battle, edging out the Chargers 38-32 in that category.
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Jada Golden led the way for UWA each with 15 points to be in double-figures for the Tigers.
UAH will now turn its attention to West Georgia as it will make a trip Carrollton, Ga. to take on the Wolves on Saturday afternoon.
Tip-off in Carollton is set for 3:00 p.m CT.
