Valdosta State Knocks Off UAH on Thursday Night

VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team fell on the road on Thursday night, dropping an 87-71 contest at host Valdosta State. UAH falls to 13-9 (6-7 Gulf South Conference), while VSU improves to 11-9 (7-6 GSC).

CJ Williamson turned in a strong performance for UAH in the setback, going 7-for-10 from the floor on his way to scoring a team-best 20 points, and he also led the Chargers on the glass with seven rebounds while additionally handing out a team-high four assists and collecting a pair of steals.

Chaney Johnson scored 14 and had five rebounds, and Luke Burnett knocked down three triples to score 13 while matching Williamson with the two steals.

UAH started the contest strong, scoring the first five points before eventually jumping out to an 8-2 lead, but an 18-2 run for the hosts gave the Blazers a 20-10 lead at the 11:43 mark of the opening half.

The visitors would cut the deficit down to as few as five, but a strong 3-point shooting effort – VSU would go 10-for-23 from beyond the arc in the first half – would allow the Blazers to lead by as many as 24 in the period before carrying a 51-30 cushion into the locker room at the halftime break.

The Chargers would rip off a 12-0 run to start the second half with the spurt pulling UAH back within nine at 51-42 at the 16:07 mark, but the Blue and White would be able to pull no closer than seven in the half as VSU had an answer to each attempt by UAH to narrow the gap.

Finishing the contest shooting 41.7 percent were the Chargers, while Valdosta State shot 53.6 percent on the evening. The rebounding battle was also tilted in the home team's favor at 35-30.

VSU's bench outscored UAH's reserves by a 51-10 margin, and the Blazers also enjoyed a 22-15 advantage in points off turnovers.

UAH will now look to rebound on Saturday when the team travels to Pensacola to battle West Florida. The Chargers took the previous meeting between the two teams this year by a 95-74 score in Huntsville.
