Chargers Edged by Eagles in Series Finale at Charger Park

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team wrapped up the season-opening series against Carson-Newman with an 11-9 loss on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park. UAH drops to 0-3, while C-N rises to 4-0.

The top of the Chargers lineup led the way on Sunday, as Garrett Bodine and Carson Villalta tied with a team-high two RBI. Bodine went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored and a home run, while Villalta notched a double in a 2-for-5 day at the plate.

Daniel McCary also tied with Bodine and Villalta with two RBI on the day, as he crushed his first career homer with the Chargers to left in the bottom of the ninth. He finished the day 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored as well.

Connor Brooks started on the mound for the Chargers for the first time in his career, as the right-hander turned in 5.0 innings with two runs allowed, three walks and four strikeouts. He was handed a no-decision for his effort.

Payton Lemons took the loss in relief to drop his season record to 0-1, after tossing two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed. Will Hotalen had a strong appearance out of the bullpen with 1.1 scoreless innings.

After both sides scored one run apiece in the first and third innings, UAH broke open the 2-2 tie with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-2.

Carson-Newman would take its first lead of the contest at 6-5 with a four-run rally in the sixth, prior to UAH regaining the lead at 7-6 with Will Noles and Jeff Hunter both scoring on an error in the bottom half of the sixth.

The Eagles went on to score two runs in the seventh and three runs in the ninth inning to lead 11-7, with McCary's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth bringing the game to its final score of 11-9.

The Chargers will be back in action next weekend on the road in Peachtree, Georgia, to take on four opponents beginning with Fairmont State on Friday at 2 p.m.
