Chargers Battle With No. 7 Union on Monday Night in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team dropped a Monday night home contest at Spragins Hall, falling to the Union Bulldogs 66-56. The Chargers drop to 3-15 (2-11 Gulf South Conference) while UU improves to 17-2 (12-0 GSC).

Sloan Mann was the Chargers leading scorer with 16 points after going 5-for-8 from the field including a season-high four buckets from beyond the arc. Alaina Taylor registered 11 points to also be in double figures for UAH, and she added a pair of steals to her performance on the night.

Jirah Rogers and Holly Harris paced the Blue and White on the glass, each grabbing five rebounds in the contest.

The game would be a back-and-forth contest in the early minutes and a couple of three-pointers just before the first media timeout from Taylor and Miajah Bullock would put the game at a 12-10 Bulldog lead. A 7-2 run for Union coming out of the media timeout would have them extend their advantage to 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Chargers would pull within two again at 22-20 at the 5:05 mark of the second frame after putting together a nice run of their own. However, Union would answer back to take a 31-23 lead into the halftime break.

Finding some momentum on the back of four consecutive three-pointers from Mann and Taylor, UAH would cut into the Bulldog lead and make it a 47-40 game at 2:00 left in the third stanza. The Chargers would get the deficit down to six points in the final quarter but Union would end up hanging on for the 66-56 final.

For the contest, UAH hit 40.0 percent of its attempts from the floor while Union turned in a 41.7 percent shooting performance. The Bulldogs were able to build up a 18-10 difference in points off turnovers which proved to be a key difference.

Shanique Lucas led the way for UU with 18 points going 6-for-10 from the field while Jaelencia Williams had 13 and Ashtyn Baker recorded 11 on the evening to round out the double-figures scorers for the Bulldogs.

UAH will now look to Saturday afternoon when they will host conference foe, Lee, at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.

Tip-off in Huntsville is set for 2:00 p.m.
