ST. LOUIS | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's lacrosse team travelled to Maryville on Sunday, dropping a 9-7 road decision. UAH slips to 3-4 on the season, while the Saints improve to 5-1.
Â
UAH was led offensively in the setback by a trio of players who each recorded two points from a goal and an assist in
Brody Phillips,
Bryce Ferraro, and
Kyle Light, while each of
Hunter Coleman,
Jake LeVette,
Brayden O'Neill, and
Jake Schramm had a goal for UAH.
Â
Ian Arnt and
Conor Young both added an assist.
Â
Coleman led the Chargers with eight ground balls on the afternoon, and each of Colin Galinski, Ferraro, and Schramm had a pair of caused turnovers.
Â
Coleman was also impressive in face-offs, winning 18 of 20.
Â
In goal for the Chargers,
Zak Welsh registered 11 saves.
Â
UAH is the first Maryville opponent this year to hold them to a single-digit goal total, limiting them to a goal total that is well below the 17 per game the team was averaging heading into Sunday's contest.
Â
The hosts outshot the Chargers by a 46-31 margin, while ground balls were nearly even with the Saints picking up 30 compared to 29 for the visitors.
Â
After the Saints opened the scoring, UAH quickly responded seven seconds later when Coleman scored at the 10:53 mark of the opening quarter, and after Schramm scored at the 7:53 mark, the Chargers would lead for much of the rest of the first quarter until Maryville tied it up at 2-2 in the final minute of the period.
Â
That goal was the first of five straight for Maryville who led 5-2 at the half before adding their sixth goal at the 13:09 mark of the third, and though LeVette and Ferraro would string together a pair of UAH tallies, another goal for the hosts provided them with a 7-4 advantage going into the fourth.
Â
Light pulled UAH within two before the Saints rattled off a pair of scores to go ahead 9-5, and though the Chargers would score twice in the final two minutes, the deficit proved too much to overcome for the Blue and White.
Â
UAH will remain in the area, taking Monday off and then playing Lewis on Tuesday in a neutral-site affair. That game is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
