ST. LOUIS | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's lacrosse team put up another great effort against a tough opponent but ultimately came up just short, falling 14-12 to Lewis in a neutral site contest on Tuesday afternoon. UAH slips to 3-5 on the season, while the Flyers improve to 6-2.
Â
A big second half from the Chargers helped the team nearly overcome what was at one point a 10-2 deficit, and that showing in the third and fourth quarters was led by
Brody Phillips who scored three times in that stretch to give him a team-best four points on the afternoon as he also added an assist in the second quarter.
Â
Three different Chargers –
Reid Vender,
Jake Schramm, and
Conor Young – each had a goal and an assist, while
Bryce Ferraro also had a two-point game with a pair of assists.
Â
Each of
Hunter Coleman,
Joseph Stuber,
Ian Arnt,
Brayden O'Neill,
Ryan Craig, and
Will Ford scored a goal in the contest, and
Josh Campbell logged an assist.
Â
Stuber also led the team in ground balls as he had seven on the day, while Coleman added six ground ball and went 18-for-26 in face-offs.
Â
O'Neill had a team-best three caused turnovers, and
Zak Welsh registered 10 saves in goal for UAH.
Â
After the Flyers took a 4-1 lead after the first, UAH would score the first goal of the second before yielding six straight to Lewis to go into the halftime break trailing 10-2.
Â
Coleman started the scoring for UAH just five seconds into the third quarter, and after Lewis answered, UAH rattled off five straight to end the frame to go into the fourth trailing just by three at 11-8.
Â
Lewis would score three of the first five goals of the fourth, going in front 14-10 at the 7:22 mark of the period, but UAH would hold it off the board the rest of the time to give itself the chance to pull within a pair with O'Neill and Phillips scoring in the final minutes to create the 14-12 final.
Â
For the game, UAH was outshot by a 44-38 margin, but the team picked up 40 ground balls compared to 31 for Lewis. The Chargers were also strong in clears, going 15-for-16 on the day.
Â
UAH will now be off until Saturday when the team travels to the Peach State for another neutral site contest, this time against North Greenville. That game is slated for a 12 p.m. CT start.Â
