CLEVELAND, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team won the Gulf South Conference series opener at Lee by a score of 6-1 on Friday evening. UAH improves to 11-17 (4-8 GSC), while LU slips to 12-15 (6-9 GSC).
Â
Senior
Wells Deloney was the star of the show in his first start on the mound this season, as the southpaw tossed the full 9.0 innings with one run allowed, three walks and six strikeouts. His record improves to 1-0 in 2022.
Â
Deloney's complete game is the fourth by a Charger pitcher this season, and he is the first UAH hurler to throw nine innings in a game since teammate
Kody Keiser had 10.0 innings on May 1, 2021, against Valdosta State.
Â
The Chargers offense backed Deloney's effort with a six-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a two-run home run by
Daniel McCary. McCary's homer was his seventh of the season to tie
Landon Ezzell for the team lead.
Â
Freshman
Jackson Lindsey led the Chargers offense with three base hits while also scoring one run.
Garrett Bodine and
Carson Villalta each had one hit to round out UAH's six base knocks in the contest.
Â
UAH and Lee wrap up the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. CT.
