Chargers Welcome West Georgia for Three-Game Series

4/14/2022 9:08:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE | The surging University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team is set to continue Gulf South Conference play at home this weekend, welcoming West Georgia for an Easter weekend series that starts with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and concludes with a noon contest on Saturday.

Saturday is Alumni Day at Charger Park with a tailgate slated for 11 a.m.

Admission all weekend is free courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.

The Chargers enter the weekend at 24-14 (12-9 GSC) and are winners of seven of their last eight including going 5-1 in conference play the past two weekends, and that strong stretch has pushed UAH into fifth place in the conference standings and only three games behind third.

The top of the UAH order has been especially strong during the team's recent winning ways, and those three batters all rank in the top 10 in the GSC in batting average with Shelby Booker hitting .433 to rank second, Kaylee Vaught checking in at fourth with her .421 average, and Kiara Akles batting .383 to rank ninth in the league.

Akles is also third in the league with her 39 RBI, while Vaught is seventh by driving in 33 runs. In runs scored, Vaught and Booker are both tied for eighth by scoring 32 times.

West Georgia visits the Rocket City at 11-26 (4-16 GSC), and the Wolves have lost 11 straight heading into the weekend. The team does feature the league's leader in average as R.J. Janke is hitting .446 on the season, and she has hit a team-best nine homers to go along with a team-high 29 RBI.

The UWG pitching staff has a 6.54 ERA and has struck out 145 batters while walking 160.

In the all-time series UAH owns a 73-12 mark against the Wolves, and those 73 wins are tied for the second-most against any opponent in Charger history (the Chargers have 79 wins against West Alabama in addition to 73 against Valdosta State). In Huntsville, UAH is 39-4 against UWG.
