Chargers Win Again at GSC Tournament Behind Brooks Strong Start

OXFORD, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team won again at the 2022 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships with a 7-3 victory over second-seeded Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. UAH improves to 27-23, while VSU slides to 30-13.

The Chargers look ahead to a matchup on Sunday between the winner of tonight's game between Lee and Delta State. UAH's contest on Sunday has an estimated 4 p.m. first pitch.

Senior Connor Brooks was sensational in his start on the mound, as the right hander tossed nearly every out with an 8.2 inning, 142-pitch performance with two earned runs allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. His record improves to 7-4 with the win.

Griffin Rivers led the Chargers offense with a 3-for-4 performance that included three of the Chargers seven RBI in the game. Mitchell Rottier tied with Rivers with three hits in the game, notching one double amongst his base knocks.

Garrett Bodine also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI out of the lead-off spot.

After a scoreless first, UAH pulled ahead in the bottom of the second with a four-run rally as Rivers, Bodine, Rottier and Landon Ezzell each had consecutive RBI singles in the frame.

A two-RBI single up the middle in the third by Rivers extended the Chargers lead to 6-0 which would hold until the sixth inning when each side scored once to make it 7-1.

VSU went on to add one run in the eighth and ninth innings, but UAH held on for the 7-3 victory on Saturday at Choccolocco Park.

This was UAH's fourth GSC tournament matchup with Valdosta State, as the squad is amidst the program's 20th appearance in the conference tournament.
