Women's Soccer Draws with CBU 2-2 in Friday's Action

10/6/2023 7:16:00 PM

Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team shared the points in a 2-2 draw at Christian Brothers on Friday night in Gulf South Conference play. UAH moves to 5-3-2 (3-2-2 GSC), while CBU now stands at 3-5-3 (1-4-1 GSC).

The Bucs scored the contest's first goal after Mya Gargone directed home a failed UAH clearance, but CBU's advantage lasted less than a minute after Jayla Gillespie tied the game at 1-1 just 41 seconds later.

The first half tally marks the sophomore's fifth goal of the 2023 campaign, which ranks first on the team and fifth-best across the conference.

Christian Brothers regained the lead just before the 60th minute thanks to a header by Flavia Iorio on the host's third corner kick of the night, and again, the Chargers would answer, this time through Maria Jansen.

Jansen has enjoyed a stellar freshman season thus far and her goal tonight puts her alongside Gillespie with five tallies on the year to rank first on the team.

Neither side would go on to break the 2-2 deadlock as the contest would finish all square after 90 minutes.

UAH fired off seven shots on goal compared to the hosts' six while the Chargers created three corner kick opportunities compared to CBU's four.

CeCe Szopa featured in goal for the Blue & White, playing all 90 minutes and registering four stops on the night.

The Chargers will continue the Tennessee road trip as they square off next with Union on Sunday at 1pm in Jackson.
