Volleyball Downs Auburn Montgomery to Advance to GSC Championship Match

PENSACOLA | The UAH volleyball team played their first match of the 2023 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championship on Saturday night, emerging victorious in the semifinal round against Auburn Montgomery 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-18, 15-11).

The Chargers improved to 18-9 (13-3 GSC) with the win and advanced to the GSC tournament championship game for the first time since 1997. 

A back and forth match, saw the Chargers and Warhawks exchange set wins for the first three sets, before UAH claimed the final two sets to clinch their spot against top-seeded West Florida in the championship match.

Caroline Moyer led the way for UAH offensively, tying her season high in kills with 17 on a .343 attack percentage. GSC Setter of the Year Savannah Rutledge contributed 39 assists to the winning effort for the Chargers and also tallied a kill, a block, and 11 digs in an all-around effort.

The Blue and White defense was electric again, as they posted 13 blocks as a squad. Kiara Hill led the Chargers in blocks with three solo and six block assists. 

The first set of the match went the way of the Warhawks 25-19 as they had their best attack percentage for the match, hitting .343. 

UAH rallied back for a 25-20 second set win, slamming 13 kills in the set. 

AUM took the next set 25-16 before UAH ripped off a pair of wins in sets four and five. The Chargers totaled six of their 13 blocks in the final two sets of the match. 

UAH is set to take on the number one seed West Florida in the GSC Volleyball Championship on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The previous matchup between the Argos and Chargers went the way of UWF 3-1.
