UAH Stumbles in Sunday Doubleheader at Shorter

ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team fell just short in the final two games of a three-game Gulf South Conference series at Shorter on Sunday. UAH fell in game one 7-6 and 5-4 in game two. The Chargers dropped to 14-13 (6-6 GSC) for the season, while the Hawks improved to 13-12 (8-7 GSC).

UAH returns to action on Tuesday with a trip to West Alabama for a midweek matchup at 1 p.m.

Shorter 7, UAH 6
Game one of Sunday's doubleheader saw the lead change five separate times, with the Hawks ultimately coming out on top with a go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Chargers were led at the plate by Brennan Vasquez who contributed his fifth home run of the season, a double, and three RBI in a 2-for-4 performance. Landon Ezzell was the only other UAH player with multiple hits as he had a 2-for-4 showing with two RBI.

On the mound, Cory Hagood came on in relief of starter Andre Orselli and gave up just two hits, one earned run, and struck out four in two innings, but was ultimately the losing pitcher in the matchup to make his record 0-1 for the season. Orselli left the game after six innings, giving up six earned runs with five strikeouts.

Shorter 5, UAH 4
In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Chargers led a resilient comeback after falling behind 3-0 in the fifth inning, and then again 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth. UAH, however, fell just short of their comeback bid in the seventh inning of the series finale, as the Hawks held on for the 5-4 win.

Four separate Chargers drove in runs in game three, including an RBI double by Ezzell in the sixth inning. Jackson Lindsey, Villalta, and Vasquez each contributed an RBI in the final innings.

The starting pitcher for UAH was Will Hotalen who pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three earned runs with a strikeout. Justin Perreault was handed the loss after giving up two earned runs in one inning of relief.
