HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team nabbed a pair of wins in a Saturday doubleheader against Gulf South Conference opponent No. 12 West Georgia on Saturday at Charger Park. The Chargers improved to 17-14 (8-7 GSC), while the Wolves fell to 22-7 (10-5 GSC).
The series marks the 12th consecutive home series victory over UWG for the Chargers, with the last series win for the Wolves in Huntsville coming in 1997.
UAH heads to Cleveland, Mississippi, on Friday and Saturday as they will return to the diamond to take on GSC foe Delta State in a three-game series.
UAH 7, UWG 3
The Chargers took advantage of a strong breeze to center field early in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as
Brennan Vasquez got the scoring started in the first inning with a two-run homer.
UWG took a 3-2 lead in the third inning, but the Chargers took the lead for good in the sixth inning on a
Garrett Bodine RBI single and would not trail again in the series.
At the plate, Bodine led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI.
Jackson Lindsey and Vasquez each contributed a pair of RBI, with Vasquez knocking the first-inning homer.
On the mound,
Andre Orselli earned the win as he struck out nine UWG batters in a 6.2 inning appearance. The Lake Orion, Michigan, native gave up three earned runs and just a single walk on a hit-by-pitch.
Will Hotalen earned his fourth save of the year as he came on with two out in the top of the seventh to stop a potential Wolves rally. The junior pitched 2.1 innings, gave up no hits, and struck out two.
UAH 8, UWG 1
In game two, UAH got off to a hot start as they notched four runs in the first inning. Ezzell started off the scoring with a two-run homer, the 10th home run of the series for the Chargers, and
Daniel McCary knocked a two-RBI double.
The remaining RBI were contributed by
Hunter Tillman, Bodine, and Lindsey in game two. Tillman and Bodine were walked with the bases loaded in the third inning, while Lindsey singled in the sixth inning to cap off the UAH scoring.
Cory Hagood recorded his first win of the season on the hill in game three as he allowed four hits, struck out a pair, and surrendered just one run in 3.1 innings of work.
Cole Loftis came in for relief and pitched 3.2 innings, gave up four hits, struck out three, and allowed zero earned runs.
