Chargers Sweep Saturday Doubleheader at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team kicked off a weekend Gulf South Conference series at Delta State with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improved to 19–14 (10-7 GSC), and the Statesmen fell to 16-17 (9-8 GSC).

The doubleheader sweep stretched UAH's win streak to four games. The two teams will match up for the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

UAH 6, DSU 5 (10 innings)
In game one, the Chargers got a productive winning performance from Connor Brooks on the mound as he went six innings, surrendering just three earned runs. UAH scored the first runs of the game in the third inning with a Garrett Bodine two-run shot.

Delta State crawled their way back from a three-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning and ultimately sent the game to a tenth frame. In the extra inning, the Chargers added two more runs. The first came on a wild pitch, while the second was provided by a Hunter Tillman RBI single.

The two runs proved to be too much for the Statesmen as the Chargers held on for a 6-5 victory.

At the plate, UAH was led by Jackson Lindsey who went 3-for-5 and had a double. Carson Villalta, Mitchell Rottier, and Tillman each had one RBI, while Bodine contributed two.

UAH 9, DSU 4
In game two, the Chargers took a three-run lead in the first inning as Landon Ezzell stroked an RBI double, followed by a Brennan Vasquez RBI single, and finished off the inning with Ezzell scoring on a throwing error by Delta State.

UAH would never surrender the lead in the contest as their lead stretched to eight runs by the fifth inning of the seven inning contest.

The Chargers were led by Dylan Johnston in the batter's box, as the junior went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Freshman Caleb Mahan contributed two RBI as well as he knocked a two-RBI triple in the third inning.

Andre Orselli started the game for UAH and gave up just one earned run in 3.2 innings of work on the mound and struck out five. Cole Loftis earned the win in relief and improved his record to 2-2 on the season.
