No. 5 UAH Set for GSC Tournament Opener Wednesday at Choccolocco Park

OXFORD, Ala. | The No. 5 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team opens play at the 2023 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships at Choccolocco Park on Wednesday as the first seed against eighth-seeded West Florida. First pitch slated for 6 p.m.
 
UAH is making its 27th all-time appearance in the GSC tournament, as the squad has won the league's championship eight times in program history with the last coming in the 2008 season.
 
The Chargers hold a GSC tournament record of 73-36 in their previous 26 appearances, which includes a 9-9 record when playing West Florida.
 
UAH enters the GSC tournament with a 40-9 overall record and a 25-4 mark in conference action, garnering the squad the first overall seed as the GSC regular season champion. Overall in the 2023 regular season, the Chargers won nine out of its 10 GSC series.
 
Head coach Les Stuedeman's offense features a total of five lineup regulars batting .340 or higher, led by Kinley Adams with a .426 batting average. Lawren Hayes paces the offense overall with 101 total bases, as she's batting .405 with 13 doubles, seven triples and two home runs in her sophomore campaign.
 
The Chargers pitching staff boasts a team ERA of 3.01 over 49 games so far this season, guided by freshman Katie Bracken with a GSC-low 1.68 ERA over 112.1 innings with a team-best 135 strikeouts.
 
West Florida opens action at the GSC tournament with a 22-21 overall record that includes a 13-16 mark in GSC play in the regular season. The Argos offense is led by Erin Moon with a .389 batting average and 17 doubles, while UWF's pitching staff owns a 4.27 team ERA.
 
The winner of Wednesday night's contest moves on to play the winner of Auburn Montgomery and Valdosta State on Thursday at 6 p.m., while the loser takes on the loser of AUM/VSU Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
