Women's Soccer Propelled to Season-Opening Victory by Gillespie's Late Strike

NASHVILLE, Tenn. | UAH women's soccer kicked off the 2023 campaign at Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday evening with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Trojans. UAH starts the season 1-0, while TNU slides to 0-1.
 
This was head coach James Ballamy's first career season-opening victory.
 
Sophomore Jayla Gillespie – a native of Decatur, Alabama – provided the game-winning goal in the 89th minute for her fourth career marker.
 
The Chargers battled back from a 1-0 deficit at the half to the Trojans, as Maialen Mera Torres leveled the contest on a penalty kick goal in the 47th minute. Mera Torres now has six goals in her career in the Blue & White.
 
Karli Newton and Ardis Haskell each played 45 minutes in goal for the Chargers, with Ardis posting a scoreless second half with a game-high three saves. Ardis picks up her first career win in her three-save performance.
 
UAH totaled six shots on goal for the contest, with the team accruing 26 shots total at Trevecca Nazarene. Gillespie and Morgan Snyder tied for the team lead with two shots on target apiece.
 
Sarah Trotter, Emily Labus and Snyder each played the full 90 minutes on Thursday night.
 
The Chargers are back in action at Charger Park for the squad's home-opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Tusculum. Admission is free again this season to all regular season Charger Park events, courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.
