Volleyball Splits Debut Matches at Ray Thrasher Classic

NASHVILLE | The UAH volleyball team opened up the 2023 campaign Ray Thrasher Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene on Friday with the Chargers falling to Carson-Newman 3-2 before defeating Bemidji State by a score of 3-1.
 
UAH is back in action tomorrow with two more matches in the Music City against UMSL at 9 a.m. and Lynn at 5 p.m.
 
C-N 3, UAH 2 (25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 9-15)
The Chargers stampeded out to a two-set lead early in their inaugural match of the season against the Eagles in a tight contest throughout. Carson-Newman came back and won the next two sets before ultimately taking the win in the fifth set. 

Kiara Hill led the way in kills for UAH, tallying 16 for the match, while Autumn Mayes made her debut in the blue and white and contributed 11 kills. 

Gracie McGee and Felicity Evans each had two service aces to headline the Chargers in the category. Mary Grace Bundrant had three block solos for the match in addition to a block assist in her first collegiate appearance.
 
UAH 3, Bemidji State 1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21)
The Chargers rebounded in their second match of the day to top the Beavers in four sets, starting with a 26-24 win in the first before the Beavers took the second set 25-23. UAH closed out the match with 25-20 and 25-21 sets for the victory.

Zoe Smith was the lone Charger to put up double digit kills in match number two of the day, scoring 10 of them toward the winning effort. 

Caroline Moyer and Mayes each contributed nine kills, with Mayes notching two service aces and leading the team with 16 digs. Tatiana Bonilla and Gracie McGee followed with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
