Women's Soccer Looks to Clinch GSC Tournament Berth with Regular Season Finales at Home Friday and Sunday

HUNTSVILLE | The UAH women's soccer team returns to Charger Park to wrap up the 2024 regular season this weekend with Gulf South Conference matchups on Friday against Spring Hill and Sunday against No. 8 West Florida. Kick-off on Friday is slated for 5 p.m., followed by Sunday's 1 p.m. game time.

The UAH women's soccer team will celebrate its Senior Night on Friday, as the program honors departing seniors Hayley Bedingfield, Ardis Haskell, Kyndall Jenkins, Katey Ann Klingel, Emily Labus, Maialen Mera, Karli Newton, and Hannah Szopa prior to the game.
 
The Chargers are seeking to clinch a berth to the GSC tournament for the first time since 2013, as the squad enters the final week of the regular season 5-7-2 overall and fifth in the GSC standings at a 4-4-2 league record. UAH is coming off a 2-0 setback at West Alabama last Friday to wrap up the regular season road schedule.
 
Junior Jayla Gillespie continues to lead the UAH offense this season with 10 points on a team-high four goals and two assists. Both Sabrina Da Silva and Michella Tortelli rate second on the team with three goals apiece, while Mera owns a team-best three assists this year.
 
CeCe Szopa has been the Chargers only goalkeeper this season, posting a 1.14 goals against average and 44 saves across 14 starts in goal. Her 1.14 goals against average enters the final weekend of the regular season rated fourth in the GSC.
 
Spring Hill starts out the week with a 6-7-2 overall record that includes a 3-5-2 mark in the GSC, which is good for 11 points and ninth in the league standings currently. The Badgers average 1.33 goals per game, guided by Poppy Binding with seven goals and three assists. SHC's primary goalkeeper Carlotta Stark boasts a 1.57 goals against average and 68 saves.
 
West Florida enters the final weekend of the regular season amongst the leaders in the GSC with an overall record of 10-1-3 and a GSC mark of 8-0-2. The Argos average 2.29 goals per game this season, led by Mya Swinton with eight tallies. UWF's primary goalkeeper Mariah Lipsey owns a 0.51 goals against average and 27 saves.
 
The top eight teams in the GSC standings advance to the 2024 GSC Women's Soccer Championships, which begins with the tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 10 with the top four seeds hosting at campus sites.
