Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. | The UAH baseball team split a doubleheader in their Gulf South Conference opening series against Mississippi College on Friday afternoon, dropping game one, 9-7, and winning game two, 5-2. The Chargers are now 7-3 (1-1 GSC) while the Choctaws are 6-2 (1-1 GSC). 

The two teams will resume their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the deciding game of the three game series. 

G1: MC 9, UAH 7

UAH took an early lead in game one, launching two home runs in the first inning from Carson Villalta and Will Noles

The Chargers led through the seventh inning, tacking on a run in the fourth on an RBI single from JC Wilburn before a Brock Butler three-run homer in the fifth inning.

The Chargers totaled 12 hits in the game, with four players recording two hits, including Caleb Mahan, Butler, Wilburn, and Villalta. 

Will Hotalen got the start in the game, pitching 4.2 innings before appearances by Carson Herring and Tanner Giles. Giles contributed a scoreless inning in relief. 

G2: UAH 5, MC 2

Game two started off with a Charger lead once again as they took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never fell behind in the game. 

Ramie Harrison kicked off the scoring for UAH with an RBI single in the second before Mahan followed up with a two-RBI double. Villalta and Jackson Lindsey each added an RBI in the fifth inning to cap off the scoring for the Chargers. 

The Chargers turned two double plays in the game and had no errors. 

On the mound, Jacob Peters improved to 2-1 on the year pitching six innings in the seven-inning matchup. Peters gave up just four hits and two earned runs and struck out five. 

Cory Hagood pitched one inning with two strikeouts and tallied his fourth save of the season. The redshirt junior has yet to give up a hit in the 2024 campaign.
