Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader With Delta State

HUNTSVILLE | The UAH baseball team split a doubleheader against Delta State in their Gulf South Conference home opening series on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 12-2 and dropping game two 8-5. The Chargers are now 13-9 (2-6 GSC), while the Statesmen are 13-9 (6-2 GSC).

UAH and DSU will square off in game three of their series tomorrow at 1 PM.

G1: UAH 12, DSU 2

For the 14th time this season, UAH got on the board first against the Statesmen in game one of the series as they scored six runs before Delta State got on the board. The Chargers used opportunistic hitting to score their first six runs and cashed in on five total errors by DSU.

Eight UAH batters had hits in the run-rule victory as Will Noles and Ramie Harrison each tallied three hits apiece. Harrison had his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Noles was a home run shy of the cycle and had three RBI. Merik Carter went 2-for-5 and scored twice.

Jacob Peters went the distance on the mound for the Chargers and had the first complete game of the season for any UAH pitcher. The junior from Helena, Alabama, had five strikeouts and gave up six hits and held the Statesmen to two runs.

G2: DSU 8, UAH 5

In the seven-inning game two, the Delta State offense that was dormant much of game one was explosive early on, scoring five runs in the first three innings of the game to take a 5-0 lead before extending the lead to 8-0 into the sixth inning.

UAH had a five-run bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to just three into the final inning. Will Hotalen's relief appearance in the seventh gave energy to the Chargers as he struck out the side, but the Blue & White would ultimately fall short with the tying run coming up to the plate twice in the bottom of the seventh.

At the plate, Carson Villalta, Brock Butler, Harrison, and Carter each had a pair of hits in the game. Carter extended his hit streak to 10 games with the 2-for-4 performance. Harrison's two RBI brought his total to four on the day to lead the Chargers.
