HUNTSVILLE | The UAH baseball team won the first game of a three-game series against Shorter on Friday evening 4-2 at Charger Park. The Chargers improved to 19-19 (7-15 GSC) while Shorter fell to 22-15 (11-14 GSC).
The win marks the third straight for UAH and ends a five-game winning streak that Shorter held entering the series.
Through the first four innings of the game, UAH and Shorter were deadlocked at 0-0 in a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for six hits in that span. The Hawks got on the board first in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Chargers answered back immediately with a pair of runs that would represent the final lead change of the game.
Four Chargers had multi-hit games with
Caleb Mahan leading the way with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate.
Merik Carter,
Will Noles, and
Ramie Harrison each had two hits in the game as well.
Presley Walker,
Carson Villalta, Carter, and Mahan each had one RBI.
On the mound,
Will Tarpley pitched 6.1 innings to earn the win in his ninth start of the campaign. Tarpley struck out seven Hawks batters and gave up just five hits and no earned runs.
Tanner Giles relieved Tarpley in the seventh inning and pitched 1.0 inning before
Cory Hagood came on for a five-out save. Hagood fanned three Shorter batters to total 10 for the evening.
The Hawks and Chargers will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Charger Park.
