HUNTSVILLE | The UAH volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the UAH Invitational presented by the Huntsville Sports Commission with a 3-1 (20-25, 13-25, 25-21, 30-32) loss against No. 12 Ferris State (7-0) and a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-9) win against Emmanuel (Ga.) (3-5).
The Chargers are now 6-1 on the season and hold the best overall record in the Gulf South Conference thus far.
Match 1 (No. 12 Ferris State 3, UAH 1):
Saturday's match against Ferris State started similarly to the Chargers' Friday night victory over Harding as the Bulldogs jumped out to a two set lead. UAH fought back to win the third set 25-21 before narrowly falling in an extended fourth set 32-30.
Grace-Blythe Cornett starred for the Chargers with 10 kills and a pair of solo blocks to go along with seven block assists.
Caroline Moyer contributed nine blocks of her own on a .421 attack percentage, while
Kayla Ward tallied seven kills and a .700 attack percentage to go along with five block assists.
Defensively,
Autumn Mayes had a team-high 23 digs and
Mary Grace Bundrant had six block assists.
Match 2 (UAH 3, Emmanuel 2):
Saturday's second match showed the Chargers prevailing in five sets after a battle with Emmanuel. UAH outpaced the Lions in attack percentage .227 to .176 and posted an edge in kills 69 to 63.
Four UAH players totaled double digits in kills, with Moyer leading the way at 15. Mayes had 14,
Emily Redman had 12, and Cornett posted 10.
Savannah Rutledge and
Ashleigh Murr each tallied over 20 assists in the match, with Rutledge at 29 and Murr at 22.
Moyer and Mayes each contributed two solo blocks, while Ward had a team-high five block assists.
Tatiana Bonilla had 23 digs in the match.
Up next for the Chargers is a trip to Montevallo, Ala. next weekend for the GSC/Peach Belt Conference Crossover where they will face off with USC Aiken, Lander, and Augusta.
