HUNTSVILLE | The UAH baseball team dropped both games of a Saturday Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Valdosta State as they fell 15-2 in game one and 16-12 in game two.
The Chargers are now 7-10 (2-7 GSC), while the Blazers improved 8-9 (7-1 GSC) after Saturday's games.
UAH will head on the road next weekend for a three-game series against Montevallo on Friday and Saturday.
G1: VSU 15, UAH 2
VSU controlled much of the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before a
Presley Walker home run drew the lead to five runs before the Blazers scored nine unanswered runs.
The Chargers were led at the plate in game one by Walker's home run along with a two-hit performance from
JC Wilburn.
Sean Lapinskes,
Jackson Lindsey, and
Taylor Bush each tallied one hit for the Blue & White.
On the mound,
Colin Patterson got the start and pitched 3.1 innings with five strikeouts.
Hunter MacLeod also threw 3.1 innings in relief and added five strikeouts of his own.
Jake Thornton threw 0.2 innings of work and did not surrender any runs.
G2: VSU 16, UAH 12
In game two, the Blazers once again jumped out to a big lead, taking a 7-0 lead before the Chargers got on the board with a Wilburn home run. VSU continued to stretch their lead to 12-1 into the bottom of the third inning.
UAH was able to climb back into the game with four RBI walks in the fourth and fifth innings. Wilburn continued a big day at the plate with a RBI double in the sixth inning, while
Luke Songy and
Brodee Bartlett each added a RBI.
VSU outpaced the Chargers, scoring three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to shut the door on the comeback bid.
At the plate, Wilburn totaled two hits and two RBI, while Bartlett had a pair of RBI and two hits. Songy led the Chargers in RBI with three, while Lindsey and
Brandon Gillispie had two RBI apiece.
On the mound,
Ty Hutto got the start and went 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Cory Hagood threw 4.2 innings and struck out two batters while giving up just three earned runs.
Jacob Peters additionally had one inning in relief.
