Softball Opens GSC Tournament Action Wednesday Against Valdosta State

OXFORD, Ala. | The UAH softball team is set to start the postseason at the 2025 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships as the fourth seed against fifth-seeded Valdosta State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Choccolocco Park.

UAH will be competing in the program's 29th all-time appearance at the GSC tournament, as the Chargers own an all-time record of 79-38 when playing in the conference championships. The Chargers have won the GSC tournament nine times in program history, with the most recent title coming in the 2023 campaign.
 
The Chargers come into the GSC tournament with a 27-20 overall record that includes a 19-12 record in GSC games in the regular season. UAH wrapped up the regular season this past Saturday with a doubleheader split with West Alabama at Charger Park.
 
UAH's offense boasts two players amongst the top 25 of the GSC in OPS (on-base plus slugging), including Maddie Cartron in sixth at 1.047 and Jada Henderson in 25th at .905.
 
Cartron leads the Chargers offense overall in 2025, boasting a team-high .356 batting average in addition to eight doubles, eight homers, and37 RBI in her senior season.
 
The Chargers pitching staff owns a 3.51 team ERA entering the GSC tournament, guided by the tandem of Katie Bracken and Megan Shurtz in the circle. Bracken leads the staff with a 2.70 ERA, 155.2 innings pitched and 178 strikeouts, while Shurtz has had a strong season with a 3.03 ERA over 118.0 innings pitched. The pair have combined for 25 complete games as well.
 
Valdosta State comes into the postseason with a 26-23 overall record that includes a 19-13 GSC record in the regular season. The Blazers average 4.7 runs per game, with the offense being led by Aniston Gano with a .401 average and 17 home runs. VSU's pitching staff holds a 4.12 team ERA.
 
The Chargers are 13-9 all-time in the GSC tournament against the Blazers, as the two teams also faced off to open the conference championships last season with UAH winning 2-1. Overall, UAH holds an all-time series record of 79-57 against VSU.
 
The winner of Wednesday's contest moves on to play the winner of No. 1 seed AUM and No. 8 seed Trevecca on Thursday at 6 p.m., while the loser heads into an elimination game Thursday at 12:30 p.m. against the loser of the AUM/TNU matchup.
