Chargers Ready to Begin 2026 Softball Campaign

1/29/2026 10:55:00 AM

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The UAH softball team will head into the new season ranked fourth in the conference, returning key contributors on both sides of the ball and earning three selections to the GSC Preseason Team. With leadership in the circle, speed in the lineup, and a balanced mix of veterans and newcomers, the Chargers are set for a competitive season ahead.

The pitching staff will be anchored by Katie Bracken and Megan Shurtz, who formed one of the most dependable duos in the circle last season and were both named to the 2026 GSC Preseason Team. Shurtz posted a 2.82 ERA, finishing 14–8 over 27 appearances while holding opposing hitters to a .254 batting average.

Bracken, also a GSC Preseason Team selection, led the staff in workload and strikeouts, throwing 172.2 innings and led the conference last season with 196 strikeouts. She recorded 16 complete games and limited opponents to a .248 average, showcasing durability and the ability to control games deep into the later innings.

Offensively, Brittany Slaten returns as a key presence and joins Bracken and Shurtz as a GSC Preseason Team honoree. Slaten hit .349 with a .426 on-base percentage, scoring 39 runs and stealing the fourth-most bases in the conference last season with 32 bases on 33 attempts.

The Chargers also return veteran Alexa Douthitt, whose leadership and experience provide stability throughout the lineup, while welcoming newcomers Allie Yeary and Mia Brown, who are expected to add depth and energy as they transition into the program.

The first matchup of the season for the Chargers will be a double-header versus Barry College, with the first pitch set at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 in Miami Shores, Florida.
