Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Comebacks Fall Short as Baseball Drop First Two to Drury

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Baseball mounted late rallies in both contests, but the Drury Panthers baseball held on each time as UAH dropped the first two games of the weekend series, falling 10–7 in Friday's opener and 8–5 in the nightcap at Charger Park.

Despite being held hitless deep into Game 1 and trailing by multiple runs in both games, the Chargers showed resilience, bringing the tying run to the plate late in each contest.

Game 1

Drury struck early in the opener, taking advantage of a difficult outing from UAH starter Zach Murphy, who was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs while recording just two outs.

Ian Sonner provided stability out of the bullpen, delivering 4.1 innings of relief while allowing three runs and striking out one to keep the Chargers within striking distance.

For much of the afternoon, Drury's pitching silenced the UAH lineup, holding the Chargers hitless through six innings. That changed in the seventh when first baseman Gavin Galenza broke up the no-hitter with UAH's first hit of the game and later came around to score the Chargers' first run.

The seventh inning ignited the Charger offense. Broddee Bartlett delivered a pinch-hit single to drive in two runs, and Jayce Upton followed with an RBI single to score Hugh Windle, trimming the deficit and bringing new energy into Charger Park.

UAH continued its push in the eighth inning, pulling within one run when Ian Reagan doubled to center field to score Braxton Griffin and Caleb Mahan, making it a 8–7 game.

But the comeback effort stalled in the ninth, as Drury added two insurance runs and secured the 10–7 victory.

Game 2

UAH received a strong start from Cole Loftis in Game 2, as the right-hander allowed just one earned run across four innings while keeping the Chargers within reach.

The Chargers grabbed an early lead in the third inning. Bartlett came around to score on an RBI single from Jayce Upton, and CJ Carson later drove in Upton on a fielder's choice to give UAH a 2–1 advantage.

Drury answered back, building a multi-run lead before UAH mounted another late push.

Trailing 6–2 in the sixth inning, Taylor Bush delivered a key two-run single, scoring Galenza and Seth Staggs to cut the deficit and bring the Chargers back within striking distance.

Once again, however, the Panthers were able to hold off the rally attempt, adding late insurance and handing UAH an 8–5 loss to secure the series victory. Jace Meadows would be credited with the loss.

Up Next

The Chargers will look to salvage the series in the finale, scheduled for Saturday, February 7 at 11 a.m. at Charger Park. Admission will once again be free, courtesy of Alabama Credit Union, as UAH looks to bounce back and close the opening homestand on a high note.
