Men's Basketball Soars Past Sailfish in South Region Quarterfinal

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. | The UAH men's basketball team faced off with the number two seed Palm Beach Atlantic in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Region Championship on Saturday and defeated the Sailfish 92-73.

The Chargers improved to 22-9 overall on the year, while PBA ends their season at 26-6.

This is the fifth time in six seasons in which UAH has won at least one game in the NCAA South Region Championships dating back to 2021.

In the first-ever meeting between the Chargers and Sailfish, UAH jumped out to a lead that reached as high as 14 points in the first half as the Blue & White shot 50 percent from three, but PBA closed the gap to just a 41-39 advantage by the end of the first half.

During the second half, UAH continued their hot streak from the field and from three as they shot over 57 percent from three in the second half. The Sailfish would go 1-for-10 from behind the arc in the second half, allowing the Chargers to extend their lead to as large as 23 points.

Matt Thurman scored 22 points to lead the Chargers as the senior went 6-for-10 from three, while Quentin Toles added 20 points to the winning effort on 5-for-7 from three. The senior from Canton, Ohio, was also just one rebound shy of a double-double as he hauled in nine boards.

Jordan Mabe and Bryce Mason added 15 points apiece as the freshman duo combined to go 11-for-15 from the field in the win.

Next up for UAH is a matchup with the number three seed West Alabama on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Chargers and Tigers have faced off three times this season, with both teams winning their home contests.
