HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The UAH baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Delta State, falling 10-3 in Game 1 and 6-4 in Game 2 to complete a three-game series sweep at Charger Park.
Game 1 – Delta State 10, UAH 3
The Chargers came out swinging early in the opener, plating three runs in the first inning. Seth Staggs delivered a two-RBI double to get UAH on the board, and Braxton Griffin added an RBI groundout to score Gavin Galenza and give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.
Cole Loftis got the start and was strong through the first four innings, holding Delta State scoreless. However, the Statesmen broke through in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game. Loftis finished with 4.1 innings pitched, allowing three earned runs and receiving a no decision.
Ian Sonner entered in relief to finish the fifth, but Delta State took control in the sixth inning, scoring five runs before adding two more in the eighth to secure the 10-3 win.
Game 2 – Delta State 6, UAH 4
The nightcap remained tightly contested throughout, with neither team scoring until Delta State pushed a run across in the fourth inning.
UAH answered in the bottom half as Seth Staggs came home on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Bush to even the score.
The Chargers took the lead in the fifth inning after a fly ball off the bat of CJ Carson was lost in the sun, allowing Ian Reagan to score. UAH extended its advantage when Caleb Mahan delivered an RBI double, bringing home Carson and Hugh Windle to give the Chargers a 4-1 lead.
Delta State chipped away with an unearned run in the sixth before rallying in the seventh, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Jaxon May (1-3) was charged with the loss despite a strong outing, pitching six innings, allowing three earned runs, and striking out three batters.
With the losses, UAH falls to 13-18 overall and 9-12 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Chargers will return to action on Tuesday, March 31, facing the Rocket City Trash Pandas at 6:35 p.m. at Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama. UAH will then return home to host Miles on Wednesday, April 1 at 1 p.m. before welcoming Union for a three-game GSC series on April 3-4 at Charger Park.
