Baseball Drops Series Finale to Montevallo

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Baseball fell to Montevallo 14-4 in the series finale Saturday morning at Charger Park.

The game was moved to a 10 a.m. start in order to be completed ahead of expected rain later in the day.

UAH came out strong offensively in the opening inning. The Chargers' first three batters — Caleb Mahan, Seth Staggs, and Taylor Bush — all crossed the plate to give UAH an early 3-0 lead.

Montevallo responded by tying the game in the third inning, but the Chargers quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Braxton Griffin delivered a sacrifice fly that brought home Bush, who scored for the second time in the game, putting UAH back in front 4-3.

From that point forward, the Falcons took control of the contest.

Tyler Smith made the start for the Chargers and worked four innings, allowing four runs — only one earned — while striking out two and walking two.

Colin Patterson entered in the fifth inning and recorded two outs while striking out two, but also allowed two earned runs. Patterson was charged with the loss and falls to 1-3 on the season.

The Chargers also struggled defensively, committing five errors in the field. As a result, only five of Montevallo's 14 runs were earned.

Offensively, Caleb Mahan and Taylor Bush led the way for UAH. Mahan finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Bush continued his strong weekend performance by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

UAH will now head out on the road for the next two and a half weeks. The Chargers begin an eight-game road trip on Tuesday when they travel to Birmingham to face Miles at historic Rickwood Field. First pitch time is to be announced.
