Livingston, AL | Baseball split a Friday doubleheader at West Alabama, bouncing back in Game 2 with a 3-1 victory to clinch a spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships in Oxford.
The Chargers dropped the opener 8-0 despite outhitting the Tigers early, as West Alabama capitalized on key opportunities and pulled away late in the game. UAH scattered eight hits but was unable to push a run across, while the Tigers used timely hitting and a three-run eighth inning to secure the win.
In Game 2, UAH responded with a much sharper performance on both sides, using timely power and efficient pitching to secure the split.
The Chargers accounted for all three of their runs in two key innings.
In the top of the second, Taylor Bush jumpstarted the offense with a solo home run to left field. Just moments later, Gavin Galenza followed with a solo shot of his own, giving UAH an early 2-0 advantage.
UAH added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Bush led off with a double and later came around to score on an RBI double from Galenza, extending the lead to 3-1.
On the mound, Jaxon Hay delivered a strong outing, tossing six innings and allowing just one run while working through traffic to keep the Chargers in control. Jase Gray shut the door in the seventh, earning the save and preserving the win.
With the victory, UAH improves to 21-22 overall and punches its ticket to the GSC Baseball Championships, set to begin next Friday, May 1, in Oxford.
The Chargers and Tigers will meet in the rubber match of the series on Saturday afternoon, April 25th, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
