UAH Drops Another One-Goal Contest

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Unable to secure its first victory of the season, the UAH hockey team fell in another one-goal game at home, losing 2-1 to visiting Bowling Green on Friday night. The loss drops the Chargers to 0-5-0, while Bowling Green improves to 2-0-1.

The Chargers controlled play through much of the first period as they were outshooting the visitors by a 7-2 margin at one point, but they were unable to capitalize on the momentum and the Falcons took advantage.

At the 7:39 mark of the opening period, Ryan Carpenter fired it past Clarke Saunders to put the visitors up 1-0.

Saunders turned in his second consecutive strong game as he made 28 saves while being named the game's No. 2 star.

He was unable to turn away the first shot he faced in the second period, however, as Dan DeSalvo was able to score just 19 seconds into the middle frame to put Bowling Green up 2-0.

The score remained that way until the Chargers were able to make things interesting midway through the third as Jeff Vanderlugt scored from the slot for his first collegiate goal. Justin Cseter and Mac Roy picked up the assists on the goal at 10:05.

Unfortunately, Andrew Hammond – the game's No. 1 star – was up to the task in stopping UAH the rest of the way as he made a total of 29 saves on the night.

Both teams finished the night with 30 shots on goal, and neither side was able to register a power play marker despite numerous chances. UAH's drought to open the season with the man-advantage continued as it could not convert on any of its five chances, but the penalty kill was strong as the unit successfully killed off six Bowling Green opportunities.

The Chargers will wrap up the series with Bowling Green on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center.
