Tournament-Bound UAH Hosts West Florida

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Closing out the regular season at home, the UAH women's soccer team will look to send its four seniors off with a win as it hosts West Florida on Sunday at Charger Field at noon. The Lady Chargers enter the day with a 5-9-2 (3-2-1 Gulf South Conference) mark while UWF holds a record of 10-3-2 (5-1 GSC).

On Saturday, the UAH side learned that it had its ticket punched to the 2011 Gulf South Conference Tournament after West Georgia tied with Valdosta State. The fourth and final position came down to the Blue and White and UWG due in part to the teams playing to a 2-2 tie earlier in Huntsville.

The Lady Chargers can partially thank Khadijah Jannah for their berth to the tournament as she scored her third goal of the season to tie up the aforementioned showdown with West Georgia, and she followed that performance up with five more goals in the next four conference games as UAH posted a 3-0-2 mark during the key stretch that propelled Sunday's hosts into the postseason.

On Sunday, UAH will honor its four seniors as Becca Mauldin, Tye Springer, Shera Stansberry, and Luting Sun all will play their final game on Charger Field. The group has amassed a total of 169 matches played and will be playing in its second GSC tournament in three years – the first group to perform that feat since the 2003 class reached in all four of its seasons.

The team will be facing a stout opponent on this special day as the three-time defending GSC champs visit, and it would be an historic win if UAH comes out of the contest on top as the program has never beaten West Florida in 16 tries.

Outscoring its opposition 38-14 on the season while owning a 234-129 advantage in shots, UWF will give Lady Charger keeper Iris Gunnarsdottir to make history of her own on Sunday.

The Reykavick, Iceland, native enters the game needing just three saves to break the school record mark for saves in a season as she owns 98 currently.

The biggest threat she will face will be Tina Murray who has an astounding 34 points on the season on the strength of 12 goals and 10 assists.

Live stats for the contest will be available at uahchargers.com, and fans are encouraged to follow the Lady Chargers on Twitter (@uahchargers).
