KALAMAZOO, Mich. – No. 13 Western Michigan scored four goals in the first period and never looked back, defeating UAH 7-1 on Friday night at Lawson Arena. The Chargers fall to 0-3 on the season while WMU opens up at 1-0.
The hosts opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the contest as Shane Berschbach scored a power-play marker. The game remained 1-0 until the Broncos had a pair of quick strikes at 13:25 and 14:32, and WMU added another score with just under two minute remaining in the opening period to produce a 4-0 edge after one.
Things calmed down in the second period as the Broncos were only able to get one shot past
John Griggs in the frame, and
Mac Roy scored at 19:23 of the period to give UAH its lone goal of the night. Recording a point in his third consecutive game to open his career, freshman
Ben Reinhardt assisted on the tally as did senior Jamie Easton.
Quickly removing any air that filled UAH's sails after the late score in the second, Berschbach scored early again – this time at the :42 mark of the third – to give the Broncos a 6-1 advantage. Another WMU strike at 12:23 produced the 7-1 final.
On the night, Griggs made 22 saves as he faced 29 shots. His counterpart in the WMU net Nick Pisellni stopped 11 UAH tries.
UAH was 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Broncos converted on two of their four chances with the man-advantage. WMU also held a 38-25 advantage on the night in faceoffs.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 6 p.m. as the Chargers seek their win of the season.
