KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The UAH hockey team picked up a strong goaltending performance but was unable to produce anything offensively on Saturday night as it fell 4-0 at No. 13 Western Michigan. The Chargers drop to 0-4-0 on the season, and WMU improves to 2-0-0.
Sophomore
Clarke Saunders recorded his 11th career performance recording more than 30 saves as he faced a Bronco team that peppered him with 41 shots on the night, and the Brockville, Ontario, native prevented 37 of them from going in.
After falling behind 4-0 early Friday night, UAH had a much better first period on this evening. Despite being outshot 14-4 in the frame, the Chargers only faced a 2-0 deficit at the end of one. It appeared as if UAH would go into the break only down 1-0, but Shane Berschbach found late-period magic and scored at 19:51 to produce a 2-0 advantage for his squad.
Coming out of the locker room strong, the Chargers recorded the first four shots of the second period but were unable to capitalize and found themselves trailing 4-0 at the end of the frame as the hosts added another pair of goals while pushing their shot advantage out to 27-9.
In the third period, Saunders was particularly impressive as he turned away all 14 shots he faced from the Broncos in the frame, but the Chargers only mustered one shot on the WMU net in the frame and suffered a defeat for the fourth consecutive game to open the season.
For the game, UAH was outshot 41-10, and the Broncos dominated draws, winning 39 of 58 faceoffs on the night.
The Chargers will now return home for three consecutive weekends beginning when Bowling Green comes to town next Friday night. The opening puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
